The largest ceramics exhibition in Southeast Asia will be held shortly through JCCB#3, or 3rd Jakarta Contemporary Ceramics Biennale. The event starts 23 September 2014 to 13 October 2014 at the Indonesian National Gallery, Jalan Medan Merdeka Timur No.14, Jakarta. The theme, as selected by co-curators, Asmudjo Jono Irianto and Rifky Effendy, is COEFFICIENT OF EXPANSION.

This two-yearly international-scale exhibition will present contemporary ceramic artworks by artists from various countries. The exhibition will be divided into three categories: Art, for non-functional ceramic works; Design for functional ceramic works with high (one-of-a-kind) aesthetic content created by industrial-scale producers or individual studios; as well as Craft/Pottery, presenting crafts-based ceramic works created by individual studios or industrial-scale producers.

The ceramic studio is an important element in the journey of ceramic art. Their products are one of the first to come to the public’s mind when they think of “ceramics”. The current exhibition features the following individual studios: Clei Pottery, Jinjit Pottery, Keramiku, Keramik Puspa, Kollekan, Ruku Ruku, Jatiwangi Art Factory. They will present functional ceramic works, created to reflect each studio’s unique signature: from tableware, to pendant lamps, figurines, and wall clocks. In addition, the exhibition also welcomes well-regarded industrial-scale producers including Galeri F. Widayanto, Jenggala Keramik, and Tanteri Keramik. What sets industrial-scale producers from individual studios is their output: industrial-scale establishments produce works in larger quantities because they employ more workers. However, their works are not too dissimilar to those produced by individual studios, i.e. functional works of exclusive designs, including tableware and condiment sets. Ceramics maestro, F.Widayanto, will present a functional artwork, in addition to the most recent works from his signature wayang series and traditional costume series.

We are almost finished with the selection process. Artist Linda Sormin, for instance, has completed her work in Yogyakarta.’Saribu Rajah, Siburu Barameh’ is inspired by Bataknese mythology, created using terracotta and traditional wood-burning kiln. In addition, several artists have begun their residencies at various studios. The residencies run from 10 August to 10 September 2014. Amornthep Mahamart (Thailand) and Kristina Rutar (Slovenia) are working in Bayat, Klaten, Jawa Tengah; Sarah Younan (Inggris) at ITB, Bandung. In addition, Bonggal Hutagalung (Bandung), our homegrown artist-in-residence is working in Jatiwangi, West Java. During the exhibition period, visitors will have other things to enjoy in addition to the works on display. There will be a symposium held after the opening day, consisting of a seminar and a series of artist talks. One of the expert panelists present is Wendy Gers, curator of Taiwan Ceramic Biennale 2014.

The public is also invited to participate in a series of planned workshops, to be held every weekend throughout the event. In addition, visitors can also witness a demonstration of the slanting wheel technique, a traditional technique that has been handed down for generations in Desa Pagerjurang, Bayat, Klaten. This 400-year old tradition was introduced by Sunan Bayat. The artisans are all women, who have been trained in the technique since childhood; meanwile, the men help to find materials and fire the products.
