Naomi Kawase Appointed to Direct Official Film of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced today that Naomi Kawase has been appointed to direct the Official Film of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Kawase will build on a legacy of more than 100 years of Olympic film production, including the documentaries created for past Olympic Games that were held in Japan: Tokyo 1964 (directed by Kon Ichikawa), Sapporo 1972 (Masahiro Shinoda) and Nagano 1998 (Bud Greenspan).

For each edition of the Olympic Games, the IOC, in close collaboration with the host city Organising Committee, reviews proposals from the host nation’s top filmmaking talent. Kawase was chosen after close consultation between the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee, Japanese film experts, international film experts, and the Olympic Foundation for Culture and Heritage, which guides productions on behalf of the IOC.

Naomi Kawase commented, “The Olympic Games have a long and glorious history, and with the international sports event returning to Tokyo after 56 years, I’m thinking about the role bestowed on me. I now feel that the ‘god of film’ that came to me that day has given me the chance to record this wonderful celebration of sport that connects people, and to leave a legacy for generations to come. I hope to capture ‘time’ and take full advantage of the appeal of documentary films and their ability to freeze those moments into ‘eternity’, allowing the significance of the Tokyo 2020 Games to be communicated worldwide.”

Naomi Kawase’s Biography

Born and raised in Nara, Kawase makes films that consistently pursue “reality” while crossing the boundaries between documentary and fiction. She has received international recognition and many awards, including the Grand Prix at the Cannes Festival. Her representative works include Suzaku, Mogari – The Mourning Forest, Still the Water, An (Sweet Bean) and Hikari (Radiance).

While extending her creative influence beyond Japan, she founded the Nara International Film Festival in her hometown and devotes herself to training younger directors. In 2018, her latest film “Vision”, starring Juliette Binoche and Masatoshi Nagase, was released worldwide. “Naomi Kawase – Retrospective and Exhibition”, a presentation of her life’s work, will be staged at the Pompidou Centre in Paris from November 23.

東京 2020 組織委員会は、国際オリンピック委員会（IOC）の決定に基づき、本日理事会にて東京2020 オリンピック競技大会公式映画の監督に河瀨直美さんが就任したことを報告しました。

【オリンピック公式映画について】

オリンピック公式映画は、20 世紀初めより、全てのオリンピック競技大会において制作されています。日本で開催された過去大会の公式映画は、市川崑氏（東京 1964 大会）、篠田正浩氏（札幌 1972大会）、バド・グリーンスパン氏（長野 1998 大会）が監督を務めました。東京 2020 オリンピック競技大会公式映画は、東京 2020 組織委員会解散後の 2021 年春に完成予定であり、その後、広く国内外で公開されます。その著作権は IOC に帰属し、IOC のオリンピック文化遺産財団管理の下、オリンピックミュージアムに収蔵されます。

このたび、長い歴史を誇るオリンピックというスポーツの世界大会を 56 年ぶりに東京で開催するにあたり、自身に与えられた役割を考える。あの日わたしの元に舞い降りて来た「映画の神様」は、スポーツを通して人々がつながり合う祭典の記録映画をこそ、この世に遺す機会を与えてくれたに違いないと、今、感じている。「時間」を記録し、「永遠」と成し得るドキュメンタリー映画の魅力を最大限に活かし、今大会の意義を世界に伝えたい。

河瀨直美（かわせ・なおみ）プロフィール

生年月日：1969 年 5 月 30 日。生まれ育った奈良を拠点に映画を創り続ける。
一貫した「リアリティ」の追求はドキュメンタリー・フィクションの域を越えて、カンヌ国際映画祭をはじめ、世界各国の映画祭での受賞多数。代表作は『萌の朱雀』『殯の森』『2 つ目の窓』『あん』『光』など。世界に表現活動の場を広げながらも故郷奈良にて、2010 年から「なら国際映画祭」を立ち上げ、後進の育成にも力を入れる。2018 年、最新作『Vision』（主演：ジュリエット・ビノシュ、永瀬正敏）が世界公開。11 月 23 日よりパリ・ポンピドゥセンターにて、大々的な河瀨直美展が開催される。映画監督の他、CM 演出、エッセイ執筆などジャンルにこだわらず表現活動を続け、プライベートでは野菜やお米を作る一児の母。
